The worlds busiest airports flawlessly handle thousands of departures and arrivals daily, often with tolerances as tight as 30 seconds.  How can this be accomplished?  The answer lies in real-time visibility and control.

Every aircraft, whether inbound or outbound, is assigned an identification number and is virtually represented on a radar map.  As aircraft near the airport they are picked up on radar and contacted via radio.   The control tower precisely positions the aircraft in an approach pattern which it coordinates from the ground.   Minor adjustments are identified via radar and radioed back to the aircraft.   In this way air traffic control can maximize airport throughput while maintaining extremely high safety and reliability.

Now what would happen if this same airport could only view a "radar snapshot" once a day?   The ability to coordinate aircraft with such tight tolerances would be out of the question.   Placing aircraft in a tightly defined formation without visibility would jeopardize safety and reliability while spacing aircraft further apart would compromise throughput.
